During the second innings of the Australian innings on the final day of the third Test match, the 31-year-old picked up three wickets and took his tally of wickets Down Under to 53. Till now, Kapil Dev held the record for most wickets by an Indian in Australia. The legendary allrounder had picked up 51 wickets at an average of 24.58.
Bumrah equalled Dev with his first scalp in the second innings and then surpassed him with the second. He dismissed Aussie opener Usman Khawaja first and then took the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne to not just break the long standing record but also put Australia under pressure early on.
The New Jersey State Police have arrested the driver responsible, who is now charged with vehicular homicide. He is being held at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
Bumrah then dismissed Pat Cummins to take his tally to 53 before Australia made a bold declaration on just 89/7. The declaration meant Bumrah's wait for his first 10-wicket haul in Test cricket continued. He had taken six wickets in the first innings. The pacer, who is currently the top ranked bowler in ICC Test rankings, got stuck at the match figures of 9/94, his second best outing in Australia.
